Grand Forks residents seem to understand a core insight of toxicology: The dose makes the poison. There's a big difference between drinking a glass of pesticide and ingesting a microscopic amount. To make this point, the American Council on Science and Health publishes an annual Holiday Dinner Menu, a list of toxic chemicals that occur naturally yet are present in Thanksgiving meals in trace amounts.

Remember, the dose makes the poison, the council and its menu point out.

Then there's the sense in Grand Forks that the alternative to spraying -- not spraying -- is worse. West Nile disease has caused actual, not theoretical, deaths.
